BROOKLAND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
From Vision to Reality

Brookland Elementary had its inception when the Planning Committee for the replacement of Colby/St. Joseph/Sacred Heart project was struck by the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board on October 26, 1999.
The Committee was to recommend three possible sites, and eventually selected the site occupying the grounds of the former Colby Elementary. The decision was based largely on the fact that most of our students can walk to this site. This supports our objective of encouraging an active healthy lifestyle and making the school easily accessible after school hours.
The vision of our school was to reflect the values and attributes that constitute the vision of the community being served by this new facility. This includes infrastructure, community use, technological needs, and unique features reflecting community history, culture, recreation as well social, environmental, and artistic features.
The school name evolved when our school community sent a number of suggested names to the planning committee and through a selection process the committee decided upon Brookland Elementary. The name reflects the environmental ethic in our vision statement; the geography of the school site with the Washbrook, which flows from the North to the South ends of Sydney; and the history of the area part of which was a loyalist land grant called “Brookland”
