A meeting of the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board was called to order today beginning at 7:00 p.m.

(8)        NSSBA REPORT:


Commissioner MacDonald reviewed his report with those in attendance. Some highlights of his report included Healthy Active Living for Children and Youth in Nova Scotia, Central Purchasing, Board member development, School Board elections, adequacy of funding and an update on plans for the Annual General Meeting for 2004.

 

(9)             NEW BUSINESS:

 

a)                 Commissioner Fraser - Riverside and Greenfield Elementary- Commissioner Fraser congratulated Riverside elementary on the release of their new CD which represents their Honor Choir.  He congratulated the administration of Greenfield elementary for their participation in Volunteer night which was well organized.

 

b)                Commissioner Ruelland - Commissioner Ruelland noted that many schools in the area require painting such as Mount Carmel Elementary and St. Agnes Elementary.  He also thanked Mr. Ron Desveaux, Principal of St. Agnes elementary for his many years provided to the Board.

 

Mr. Matheson spoke regarding the older sites which require painting throughout the Board.

 

 

(10)          CORRESPONDENCE:

 

Mr. Peach noted that there was no correspondence.

 

(11)           SUPERINTENDENT=S REPORT:

 

Superintendent Davis thanked Ron Desveaux for his hard work and loyalty to the Board.  He also mentioned the absence of two valuable staff members at Central office; Mr. Archie MacEachern, Director of Student Services, who is re-cooperating at home and plans on returning to his position shortly and  Mr. Marvin Harvey, Coordinator of Student Services who is working hard to overcome his illness. Superintendent Davis reviewed his report with those in attendance. Highlights of the report included the recent budget announcement, declining enrollment and the hard work of school Board members.  After School Activities are taking place at Greenfield Elementary and Greenfield Elementary has received the Gary MacDonald Memorial Award due to these initiatives.  The Superintendent=s report is posted on the Board website.

 

 

(12)          REGIONAL EDUCATION OFFICERS REPORT:

 

Mr. Jim Burton reviewed his report with those in attendance. Highlights of the report included School Advisory Councils, Education Week, Roots of Empathy Workshop and Junior High Course offerings. Mr. Burton mentioned the Lieutenant Governor Awards ceremony which will be taking place at Riverview Rural High.(Copies of this report are attached to the original minutes)

 

Commissioner Best questioned Mr. Burton on the status of a First Nations representative to the Board. Mr. Burton stated that an appointment would be made in the near future.
