(7)             ALEX MACDONALD AMBASSADOR AWARD RECOGNITION:

 

Board Chair Elizabeth MacPhee advised those in attendance that on September 8, 2004 the Alex MacDonald Ambassador Award was given to Ms. Denise Lewis, a cleaner at Malcolm Munroe Junior High.Ms. Lewis was recognized for her significant contribution to the Workplace Education project initiated for fellow CUPE members.Mrs. MacPhee noted that Ms. Lewis was a role model for all workers in Nova Scotia because of her commitment and desire to pursue learning opportunities in the workplace.The Board and Management are proud to state that Ms. Lewis is an employee of the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board.

Superintendent Davis reviewed his report with those in attendance. Some highlights of his report included the Transition Plan, Strategic Plan and the Business plan. (Copies of this report are attached to the original minutes)

(12)          REGIONAL INSPECTORíS REPORT:

 


Mr. Jim Burton reviewed his report with those in attendance. Highlights of the report included the sod turning ceremony for the new school to replace Rankin/Christmas Island.Mr. Burton noted that the ceremony was well attended and a success.Other highlights of the report included NSSAL funding, Funded Professional Development and Take our Kids to Work day.(Copies of this report are attached to the original minutes)

 

(13)          NEW BUSINESS:

 

a)                 Commissioner Stubbert - Requested that Human Resources review the LBG staffing at Sydney Mines Junior High. Mrs. MacIsaac, Director of Human Resources advised those in attendance that a review of the school staffing has occurred and an increase in LBG staffing will occur.

 

b)                Commissioner Stubbert - It was noted by Mrs. MacIsaac, Director of Human Resources that the Teacher Assistant staffing posting will be concluded this week.

 

c)                 Commissioner Bates - Sex Booklet- Mr. Archie MacEachern, Director of Programs and School Services reviewed the distribution process of the Sex Booklet.

 

d)                 Commissioner Campbell - Vandalism - Mr. Don Matheson, Director of Operations and Mr. N.E. Davis, Superintendent spoke with regards to the vandalism occurring in our schools.Commissioner Campbell requested that a press release be issued with regards to this serious issue.

 

e)                 Commissioner Bain - Introduced to those in attendance, the new principal of Rankin, Mr. Chris Nicholson.

 

f)                 Board Chair Elizabeth MacPhee - Thanked the principal, staff and community for their full support during the sod turning ceremony.

 

g)                 Commissioner Best - Expressed his concerns with regards to testing of students.
