EDUfest 2013 Posted by Michelle MacLeod
(May 1, 2013)

| The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development has planned over 45 wonderful summer sessions this year for educators. EDUfest 2013 refers to all summer sessions including the 40 being offered at NSCC Waterfront Campus in Dartmouth, August 19-23. EDUfest Kids is back at NSCC Waterfront this year. This is a hands-on, minds-on session designed for the children, aged 8-11 , of summer session participants. Look for details in our EDUfest 2013: Summer Learning Opportunities for Teachers booklet. Attached is a pdf version of the EDUfest 2013: Summer Learning Opportunities for Teachers booklet. You will also be receiving a paper copy of the booklet at your meeting this week. It is available on line for educators to peruse and/or download from our EDUfest website. Our website goes live later today! Please check it out: https://edapps.ednet.ns.ca/SummerSession/ There are a few changes this year: - several sessions offer reduced rates for substitute and student teachers
- we are not distributing a paper booklet to schools
- there will be a poster sent out to schools at the end of May to be posted in staff rooms or mail rooms
- educators are encouraged to use the website as a resource . It provides descriptors, registration information, maps to venues and session times. It will be available for the next 4 months so teachers can access up to date information about the summer sessions. Deadlines for registration and locations vary. Please read the descriptors with care.
- Teachers can access the EDUfest website directly at https://edapps.ednet.ns.ca/SummerSession/
- The website can also be easily be accessed from educators’ favourite sites such as:
- Department of Education and Early Childhood Development
- EduPortal
- NSTU
- School Board websites
- Student Services Website
While mail in registrations are accepted, we are encouraging teachers to register on line. It is fast, easy and secure. We even provide tech support. If you have questions, please communicate with the Session Contact person or myself. Please share the EDUfest 2013 link with new hires and substitute teachers. Of course, we would encourage you forward this email on to schools. Thank you for your support. Perhaps we will see you at some of the EDUfest 2013 events! WELCOME TO OUR RESEARCH GROUP! :) Sydney Academy Song Writers is a research group comprised of student musicians from Sydney Academy who have an interest in writing songs and participating in social science research as interviewers and discussion leaders on the topic of school engagement through music making. Our group meets once a week after school to write songs and share song writing tips. But that’s not all. We perform in the school and larger community, record in studio, and talk about the whole process with others. Our research methods and methodology have received full ethical approval from the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board, the University of Prince Edward Island Research Ethics Board, and the UPEI PhD Committee of our music teacher, Ms. Lorway. We hope you enjoy scrolling through the pages of our website and learning a bit more about what we do and why we do it. We are also interested in enhancing our process and our site is still in progress, so please feel free to send us your feedback at saswclub@gmail.com. Enjoy! Nova Scotia International Student Program Posted by Administrator
(March 30, 2012)
|
| The Nova Scotia International Student Program, in partnership with the Centre for Spanish and Mayan Studies of the University of Campeche in Mexico, proudly brings this exciting opportunity to learn a new language and develop leadership skills in an international setting.
Through the Nova Scotia International Student Program (NSISP), 21 students received scholarships to attend a leadership camp in Mexico. These students displayed outstanding leadership skills in their school and community and were selected through an application process, written essay, principal and teacher recommendations, academic achievement and community involvement.
The Nova Scotia - Campeche International Leadership Camp (NSCILC) is held in Campeche, Mexico for two weeks each March. Canadian students are matched with Mexican students, who become their host families and leadership partners. Our students have the opportunity to experience the richness of Spanish language and culture by living with a Mexican family for two weeks.
Campeche is a UNESCO World Heritage city and offers many cultural sites to visit and explore. Each day the students study at a local university and take advantage of daily language classes, a rich leadership curriculum, teambuilding activities and social justice projects. Students participate fully in every aspect of the camp and work with underprivileged children and young adults through their social action project.
Students have participated in projects designed to improve the quality of life in a local orphanage and an athletic camp for under privileged children. This year’s students participated in a variety of activities to raise money, collect toiletries, books and other supplies to support the local Mexican children and young adults through their 2012 social action project.
Four students from three local high schools were participants in this year’s camp.

(January 26, 2012)
|
| The Jennifer Keeping AccessAbility Centre is always looking for qualified BEd tutors to provide one-on-one tutoring in a variety of content areas or disciplines. The demand for tutors in specific subjects will depend on students’ needs each semester. When a request for a tutor is made, the tutor database is checked to verify whether there is a match. If we cannot find a match, an advertisement will be placed with the department concerned.
