What is a Health Promoting School?

“A health promoting school is a school that is constantly strengthening its capacity as a healthy setting for living, learning and working.”      – World Health Organization

Experience and research evidence strongly suggest that a comprehensive approach to school health promotion can influence the health-related knowledge, attitudes and behaviours of students.

Good health supports successful learning, and education supports good health.

A school that works to define and promote health will help children make informed decisions that could help their well-being for years to come. As partnering improves, resources expand and the community approach to health education becomes a way of being.

Health Promoting School Champions

Health and learning in school are interrelated.  Schools are better able to achieve their primary mission of education if students and staff are healthy physically, mentally, and socially.

By using the Health Promoting School approach in planning and managing everyday programs and practices, schools maintain a strong focus on promoting the well-being of all school community members.

Since the Health Promoting School Champions Program is for every school using the HPS approach, the following resources are offered to support your schools efforts to create a healthy school environment.
