The Joy of Science
Index

This site, The Joy Of Science, is a collection of science experiments compiled  by Mr. Martin Schwartz. Originally created for use with the students of the Joy Program at Mount Carmel Elementary School, New Waterford, NS, these experiments point students toward discovery and exploration. Hopefully, this site will facilitate an exchange of ideas and information between students and educators.

The joy of success when an experiment works and the fun of doing science experiments were more in mind than the methodical outcomes of learning which are achieved anyway if there is curiosity and interest. While this is not a a science textbook, it does provide great resource materials for teachers at all grade levels. A short, quick experiment done before an English lesson or a lesson in Social Studies will draw the attention of the student and keep interest alive.

For any student the information provided can be a starting point of a project for a science fair.

Experiments were chosen avoiding heating with a flame, unsafe chemicals and electricity other than from a flash light cell or battery.

Materials needed were limited as far as possible to what can be obtained easily at home, in the kitchen or dollar store.

It was not possible to give credit to all the discoverers of these experiments. (Obviously most of them are not mine.) However, the simple electric motor (expt. No:23) was designed for American Museum of Atomic Energy, Oakridge Associated Universities, for use in schools.
