9. Electrolysis Of Water

Material: 
9 volt battery -- Glass of water -- Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate)
Method: 
1) Place a fresh nine volt battery in a glass of water and add a teaspoon of epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) and stir.
2) Watch bubbles of gases given off at the positive and negative poles. Water is decomposed by electricity into two gases, hydrogen and oxygen. Gas given off at
the negative pole is the hydrogen and gas given off at the positive pole is the oxygen.
Note:
More hydrogen (twice the volume) is set free than the volume of oxygen.
(A clean plastic cup can be used for this experiment)
