Coal Bowl 2015 - Honorees

HONOREES:

Members of the 1974 Scotchtown Raiders Maritime Intermediate 'A' Fastball Champions

The Raiders, originally named the Scotchtown Ten Pennies, held an eight-year dynasty in the Nova Scotia Intermediate ‘A’ Fastball league that began in 1967. Over this eight-year span the Raiders won 5 Cape Breton Championships, 4 Nova Scotia Championships, and 4 Maritime titles. The team was lead by the same dedicated coaching staff of Bill Williamson, who is being honored this year as a division chair, Kenny Timmons Sr., and Duncan Blewer.   During the 1974 season the Raiders were once again vying for the Nova Scotia title. That year the championship was being held in Brookfield and the teams’ first game was delayed by rain. The game was rescheduled for midnight and the Raiders came away victorious with the ninth inning coming to a close at 2:30am. The team was told they still had to play their next regularly scheduled game at 10:00am. Unphased, the team suited up a mere 7 hours later and emerged that day as Nova Scotia champions.  The Raiders finished the 1974 season by claiming their third Maritime title. In 1975 the team broke up, after winning another Maritime title, as they were told by Softball Nova Scotia that they had to move into the Senior Fastball league as they were too strong for the Intermediate league. The players were then dispersed to other teams in the league including the Red Devils and the Hawks.  The Raiders are one of the most successful baseball teams to come out of New Waterford. Coach Bill Williamson has said that the success of the team over those eight seasons was greatly due to the camaraderie amongst the players and also due to the fact that they had such a strong core of returning players each year.

The Coal Bowl Board of Directors is very pleased to honor the 1974 Scotchtown Raiders Fastball Team.
