HONOREES FOR COAL BOWL 2018

The 1966-67 Mount Carmel Boys Soccer Team
Nova Scotia Provincial Champions

The 1966-67 edition of the Mount Carmel High School Boys Soccer Team was one of the finest teams in the school’s storied sports history. The John Gillis coached aggregation were just two games away from an immaculate season. The team sported a 12 win, 0 loss record heading into the provincial finals.  Besides sporting a spotless record, the team led by its’ outstanding Keeper, Jerry MacDonald, hadn’t allowed a goal in their twelve victories.  The team’s Halfback lineup was the key to its success. Led by the late Gary “DuddieMan” McDonald and the late Henry ”Hawk” Hogan, the Halfbacks quarterbacked the high-powered offence, which averaged over 4 goals per game.

After easily winning the Cape Breton Championship, the Mounties advanced to the Eastern Nova Scotia Playdowns and ran roughshod over the Antigonish Rural High squad by a score of 10 to 0 in a two game total goal series.  The team then went on to shutout Colchester Rural High in the Provincial Semi Finals, setting up a Provincial Championship Series against Sidney Stephen High School from the Halifax area.

The championship series was played in New Waterford on the team’s infamous dirt field.  As things turned out, the home field advantage failed to hold as the Mounties encountered a very strong Sidney Stephen squad.   The teams battled to a 1 to 1 draw in the first game, after the Mounties allowed its first goal of the season. This set the stage for a winner take all affair the next day. After battling to a 1 to 1 tie in the second game, the teams fought through a scoreless overtime. Rules of the day allowed the visiting team to decide if they would play successive overtimes.  Sydney Stephen exercised its’ prerogative and decided not to play anymore overtimes. The end result, a split Nova Scotia Headmasters Championship. A bittersweet end to a remarkable season.
