Principal’s Message

2009/2010

It once again gives me a great deal of pleasure to welcome everyone to the Sydney River Elementary School community for another school year. I would like to extend a special welcome to any new parents or students who are joining us for the first time. It is my hope that you will enjoy your stay at SRE and will take advantage of all that we have to offer. Please feel free to drop by the office at any time if you have any questions or concerns that you would like addressed. My door is always open and I look forward to working with you, so that your son or daughter has the best possible educational experience, while at SRE.

It is hard to believe that two months have gone by already. So many activities are already in full swing, some are completed, and there’s more to come. We are a very busy school and I thank all of you for the high level of cooperation we have received to date.  I would like to list just a few of the highlights for the students thus far: Playground improvements; successful opening day for new primary students (mostly just the parents cried!); school pictures; gr.3 & 6 provincial literacy assessments; scholastic book fair (over $5000.00 in books sold); fundraiser (over $12,000 sold); C.B. Hospital penny drive (over $ 900.00 donated); bus evacuation practice; some class field trips; Fire Prevention Week activities; Credit Union Fat Cat Program; Halloween Parade and parties! Plus our school sport teams – 3 girls’ basketball teams, 1 boys’ basketball team, a school hokey team, and a girls’ volleyball team. Intramurals are now under way at lunchtime. The Steve Nash basketball program for students in grades P-3 is also under way! We have a new Art club for grade 4-6 students and a French Club newspaper group. I would like to thank all of the staff and volunteers for enriching the lives of our students by providing many of our extra-curricular activities.

Our school skating program will begin this week and continue into January. The primary classes will skate in January… we hope Santa will be leaving skates under the tree! I’m proud to say I now know all the names of our primary students. The little girls with the blond hair were a bit challenging but I’ve got them figured out now! I think Isabel tried to trick me by wearing a hat over her braids, but to no avail! It also looks like I have a couple of Montreal Canadian fans in primary… Logan and Cameron have very nice jackets!

For your information our student enrollment is 325…up ten students from last year, so that is good.

Believe it or not Ms.Favaro is starting to prepare for the Christmas Concert. Also, the Home & School Association is working hard in preparation of our annual Tea & Sale, which will take place on December 5. This is one of my favorite events of the year because it brings our school community together for a very nice day. Nothing better than a hot cup of tea with friends!

Of course, what schools are all about at the end of the day is teaching and learning. I truly believe we have the most dedicated and hard working staff that a Principal or parents could hope for. Add to that students who come to school every day wanting to learn and we have the ingredients to produce very successful students. Parental support is also necessary and we are fortunate to have lots of that at Sydney River Elementary.

Together We Do Thrive!

“ Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success.”

Sincerely,

Mikki Armishaw
