PEBS/Code of Conduct

Introduction

It is the goal of the Glace Bay Elementary School Code of Conduct to create a safe and positive learning environment. We strive to provide all students with opportunities to experience academic success, to develop their self-esteem and to respect themselves and others. This is a proactive school-wide approach to positive discipline that is based on the assumption that desirable behavior should be taught and should be reinforced.

PEBS

At Glace Bay Elementary School , we are implementing the Positive Effective Behavior Support system (PEBS) to ensure the success of all students. Introducing, modeling and reinforcing positive social behavior is an important part of the students’ educational experience. Teaching behavioral expectations and recognizing students for following these expectations is a proactive approach. Our goal is to establish a climate in which appropriate behavior is the norm.

Code of Conduct

The Glace Bay Elementary School Code of Conduct comprises principles, standards of behavior, identification of appropriate behaviors and consequences of non-compliance. Its purpose is to set the context for a safe and productive learning environment. Reference is made to “school members” throughout this Code. “School members” include students and all adults whose roles or jobs place them in contact with students in school settings and school activities

Principles

(Nova Scotia Department of Education Act)

Respect

It is expected that school members will exhibit behavior that shows respect for the rights, property and safety of themselves and others. This is outlined in the Glace Bay Elementary School-Wide Behavior Expectations Matrix.

Responsibility

It is expected that school members will accept personal responsibility for their behavior in order to maximize a safe and productive learning environment.

Rights

It is expected that school members will honor the rights of others through the process of learning and demonstrating appropriate behavior in the context of social responsibility.

Explanation of the Glace Bay Elementary School-Wide Behavior Expectations Matrix

The matrix is a user-friendly chart which is designed to inform school members of expected behavior. It reflects our School Code of Conduct which is based on four areas of expectations; respect for self, others, environment and learning. These four areas of respect are referred to as “The Fantastic Four”. The matrix supports a system of positive behavior for all members within all areas of the school including the classroom and non-classroom settings.

Standards of Behavior

(Nova Scotia Department of Education)

School members will:

  • Show respect for the rights, property and safety of themselves and others
  • Respect and appreciate diversity of all school members regardless of their race, culture, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, age and ability
  • Express themselves with socially acceptable language and gestures
  • Exhibit behavior that avoids all forms of intimidation, harassment, racism, and discrimination
  • Dress in accordance with school dress standards
  • Treat school property and the property of others with a reasonable standard of care
  • Respect the responsibility of all school members in exercising their duties
  • Promote positive behavior through the avoidance of all types  of violent acts
  • Refrain from the possession of any form of a weapon on school property
  • Refrain from the possession of and being under the influence of all forms of intoxicants on school property
  • As appropriate, attend classes, activities and events and be prepared and punctual

Consequences of Non-Compliance

Discipline is intended to promote the learning of self-control and to change inappropriate behavior. Expected behaviors must be actively taught both at home and in school. When there is non-compliance with the behavioral expectations, appropriate consequences will be implemented. The following principles will be followed; consequences should:

·        Be appropriate for the student’s stage of development

·        Reflect the severity of the misbehavior and take into account the frequency of the misbehavior

·        Be chosen primarily for their educational value

·        Make sense to the student as much as possible

·        Be appropriately timed

When managing severely disruptive behaviors

·        Inappropriate actions are never ignored

·        Appropriate action is always taken

“Fantastics” Reward System

PEBS Code of Conduct is intended to focus on the positive and decrease undesirable conduct. When students behave responsibly, their self-esteem rises and motivation for achievement increases. The Glace Bay Elementary “Fantastics” Reward System promotes respect for self, others, environment and learning. When students are recognized for demonstrating respectful behavior, the entire school community will benefit.
