Visual Arts
The focus of the visual art program at Malcolm Munroe Junior High School is the "self". Students at this age are very egocentric, which makes self exploration focus for these students. Projects are designed to encourage students to explore their own self image
through a variety of media including drawing, painting, mural making, clay, papier mache, etc. Themes, such as, human emotion, the natural environment, the art of Matisse, and ancient Greek geometric pottery are used to create projects which are designed to stimulate self exploration. Students, at various points in the program, are asked to address their emotional outlook, the things that sum them up as unique human beings, what others might remember them for, what they fight about and other topics which generate as much conversation as they do art work. The program helps students deal with the traumas of moving from childhood to adulthood in a world which sometimes seems to push them too fast towards the latter.
