School Information
General Information: The following information is for the benefit of students and parents. Please do not let problems go unresolved. The staff, administration, and guidance counsellors are here to help you. Feel free to contact them in person or by telephone at 564-4587.Attendance: Daily attendance at school is required of all students. Parents/Guardians are requested to notify the school if a student will be absent from school by calling 564-4587 (before 10 am, if possible). In the case of a short absence, students should have a "homework buddy" collect assignments from each class missed. All homework is posted on the school website. Upon your child's return, the missed assignments must be collected from the homework buddy and completed as soon as possible. Any missed tests will generally be written on the day that the student returns.
For an absence of more than five days, please contact the school and arrangements will be made to have an envelope in the office where teachers can place missed assignments for the student or a parent to pick up.
Illness: Students who become ill during the day should report to the office as soon as possible. They must not remain in a washroom or attempt to go home without checking with the office first. No student should leave school without permission from the office and before the secretary contacts the home. In case of illness, students must not call home using the pay phones. Such calls must be made by a secretary in the office.
Lateness: All students are expected to be punctual and arrive prepared for class each morning and for all classes throughout the day. If students are late arriving at school, they are to report to the office before proceeding to class. School begins at 8:45 with the playing of our national anthem.
Leaving School Grounds: Students who are not bussed to school may go home for lunch if they wish, however, like all other students, they must obtain permission to leave at any other time. Students who are normally conveyed by bus are not permitted to leave the school grounds without the permission of the school administration.
Smoking: The Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board has a written policy which forbids smoking by anyone at any time, in or on any school property under their jurisdiction. This policy is strictly enforced. Repeated offenses may lead to suspension from school.
Dress Code: Students are to dress appropriately for school at all times. Hats and jackets are to be placed in lockers. Students are not permitted to wear hats or jackets in the classroom. Separate indoor shoes are not necessary except in the gym. Students wearing clothing with inappropriate slogans will be asked to change.
Medical Danger: Several students have been identified as having a life threatening allergic reaction to peanuts The only way to ensure a safe environment for these students is to try to make our school peanut-free, To do this, we need everyone's co-operation. Therefore, we ask that all parents/guardians check ingredients and not send any foods to the school which contain peanuts in any form or amount.
Student Fees: All students will be charged a $40.00 student fee. This will be payable in two installments, one in September and the second at the end of October. Student fees are used to fund school-wide student activities.
Telephones: Students are to use the pay telephones situated near the gym. Office phones may be used by students in emergency situations. If, for any reason, a student needs to contact home to have a parent come and take them from the building, such calls must be made at the office by a staff member. Parents and students are requested not to phone the school with personal messages. Only messages of immediate urgency will be handled. Please phone the school at 564-4587 if there is such an emergency.
Cameras: Cameras may be used only with permission from school administration.
Cellular Phones: The use of cellular phones (including text messaging) is strictly prohibited inside the school. Cell phones must be turned off and put away while in the building.
Lockers: Students should not leave valuables in their lockers. Only locks provided by the school are permitted on the lockers. Combination numbers should be kept private. The school will not be responsible for valuables or books left in lockers. There will be a $5.00 replacement charge for lost combination locks.
