Politics and Policies
The Treaty of 1752- the treaty of 1752 guaranteed Mi'kmaq hunting & fishing rights, rights that have been included in earlier treaties. It also included the right to trade & promised gifts such as blankets & tobacco.
Enfranchisment- This meant that natives gave up their Indian status to become ordinary citizens.
The Indian act of 1876- Under this act reserve lands are held in trust by the crown for the use of band members.
The Centralization Policy(1942)- The aim of this policy was to cut costs by centralizing all the Mi'kmaq bands in N.S into 2 central locations.
The White Paper Policy(1969)- Under the provisions of the white paper, previous treaties would no longer have any weight. The White Paper Project would have transferred all reserve lands to the federal Government to the native people.
Citizens Plus(1969) or Red Paper- Citizens plus rejected the provisions of the white paper, stating that recognition of Indian status is essential for justice.
