| Construction of the coastal defense forts around Sydney Harbour
began in earnest in the summer of 1939 with the No. I Temporary Gun Emplacement
at Fort Petrie entering service within days of the declaration of war in
September.
Work on the Harbour defenses continued at a feverish pace over the winter of 1939-40 with the bulk of the project being done by local laborers by hand. In the spring, Fort Petrie's permanent gun emplacements had been finished and her two Quick Fire Breech Loading Naval guns set in place and tested. Built at a cost of $105,000 by E.M. Cape Co., FT. Petrie would
serve the longest of the Sydney forts and would be decommissioned and dismantled
in Oct. 1956 after 15 years of faithful service.
