FORT PETRIE: RECENT HISTORY

RECENT HISTORY & THE VALUE OF THE FORTS

Left to deteriorate over a period of 34 years, the harbour defenses had become both an eyesore and a danger to the public safety.  The advent of long range bombers, intercontinental missiles, and improved radar systems, had long since removed the effectiveness of Sydney's defenses.  The forts had died a natural death.

In 1990 a group of concerned citizens formed the Sydney Harbour Fortification Society with the idea of preserving and protecting the history and heritage related to the coastal defenses in Cape Breton.  It was felt that the intrinsic historical value of the forts could be employed as an educational tool for schools, tourists and the general public.  Furthermore, it would prove to be a special attraction because it is not only a monument to Canada's role in the naval aspects of both world wars, but also to Cape Breton's own role.

More specifically, Sydney's contribution as a focal point for the convoys would be highlighted, as would the anti-submarine campaign waged by the Royal Canadian Navy through out the war years.  This effort, it was hoped, would also recognize the important role played by the forts in the local area.  The war effort and convoys had boosted the production of coal and steel on Cape Breton leading to an increase in the amount of materiel for ship plate and shell steel for manufacturing ammunition.

Recently, the Fort Petrie site received recognition as a National Historic Site and was awarded the Atlantic Canada Bulwark Plaque from the Historical and Monuments Board of Canada.  This award represents the historical significance of all the Cape Breton defenses.

As an on-going effort, the Fort Petrie site has been established as a military museum and interpretive centre to display artifacts, photos, and various items related to the history of the forts and the wartime era.  Located in the BOP, the museum continues to grow and expand.
