FORT PETRIE TIME LINE




1740    First record of Fort erected under Colonel Armstrong-Governor of
          Cape Breton.

1741    Naval battle fought between French and New England Invaders at
          the entrance to Spanish Bay.

1781    Batlle between American Revolutionist and British strength was
          six sail warships - 150 guns, convoying coal to Halifax.

1793    Fort re-built under Governor DesBarre.

1813    Fort re-built under Govemor Brigadier Sawyer.

1914    World War II Fortifications constructed. These guns emplacements
          are still visible.

1939    World War II Fortification constructed gun emplacements.

1956    Fort Petric - last of Sydney Fortifications to be de-commissioned.

1990    Sydney Harbor Fortification Society Inc. (SHFS) incorporated with
          the intent to preserve the historical integrity of Fort Petrie -
          develop as a Museum / Tourist Attraction.

1991    SHFS acquired ownership. SHFS was granted Supreme Court injunction
          preventing Municipality from destroying or interfering with the
          development of the Fort Petrie Site.

1993    MKX anti-submarine mortar received from National Defense, Supply
          & Services Minister, Kim Campbell.  Installation costs donated by
         Army, Navy & Airforce Veterans, Unit 217, New Waterford.

1994    Fort Petrie designated as Municipal Heritage Property by County
          of Cape Breton.  Coastal development research project recommend
          development of the Fort Petrie Site.

1998    Received the National Atlantic Bulwark Plaque from the Monuments
          Board of Canada recognizing the importance & efforts of all the
          Fortifications along the Coast of Cape Breton during the War-Time Era.
