Comparing Energy Sources
Chemistry 12 – Thermochemistry Project
1. Choose an energy source from the list provided (you may suggest a source not on the list). A maximum of two groups can do the same topic. Groups can include two or three people, or project can be done individually.
2. Research your energy source. Your research should cover the following:
a. Description of the energy source
i. What is it and how is it used?
ii. Is it better suited to industry, or to individual homes or appliances?
iii. Is used in Nova Scotia? Where? Where is it used?

b. Risks and benefits
i. Environmental impact – covering all stages, for example: exploring for oil; drilling for oil; refining oil; and using oil.
ii. Efficiency
iii. Economic – jobs related to the energy source, spin-offs, etc.
iv. Would you recommend this energy source? Why or why not? What are some advantages and disadvantages of this energy source (be specific!)?

3. Ensure that you use a variety of sources and list your sources on a Reference Page (Bibliography) using APA style. Minimum of four different sources (more are recommended).

4. Create a power point presentation. The power point may incorporate text, still images, video, and audio. Power point should include at least 10 slides.

5. Items to be handed in:
a. References
b. power point presentation
c. written summary of project (2-3 pages). Summary must be typewritten, 12 size font and double spaced.

- Students will need a calculator for the semester.

- Students will begin the semester with an independent unit. The unit itself is due Tuesday February 26th, and there will be a test on the work completed Monday March 4th. Students are encouraged to work on this unit everyday and not fall behind, since we will be doing different classwork at the same time. Students were given two days to work on the unit in class.

- students will be going to the library Wed. February 27th to learn about APA referencing, and how to use EBSCO host for a research paper. Paper outline as follows:

Physics 12 Research Assignment
DUE: Thursday March 7th

You may do your research on either a physicist or a Canadian contribution to physics. You will be going to a library tutorial, then given one period in the library to begin your research. You may not use Google or wikipedia. All sources of information should come from scholarly journals (EBSCO).
Paper should be at least 3-4 pages, 12 size font and double spaced. It must also include a cover page and a reference page (not included in the 3-4 pages!) Ensure you use a variety of sources (at least 5), and you must use APA style formatting, and reference within your paper.
There may only be one topic per person, so clear your topic with me before you begin. Topics are fist come, first serve.
