INTERNET
ACTIVITIES
Author: Gail Watson Hyperstudio and other Internet activities EDITOR'S NOTE: I used a form of INTRANET in my lab last year. I did not have the Web Whacker or the Web Buddy, I was making up my own interactive, teaching, web sites and using them on the server. The kids loved it and so did I. This type of teaching allows you to control what the students are veiwing, this is becoming more important every day. By all means use either of these two programs. They will save you hours of searching and your hair will last longer. The best way to save time using the Internet to download pictures for Powerpoint or Hyperstudio presentations is to use a program like Web Buddy or Web Whacker. You find the sites you want the kids to use and essentially save them to your disk or hard drive. They you don't have to watch them while they think that they are on the Internet directly. In our school district, 5th graders are required to learn how to search. One of the ways to accomplish this without running into the difficulties of reading levels is to have them search for graphics. When doing biographies, I have the kids search for a picture of their person. Then the kids are taught how to download the pic and insert it into a word processor, power point and/or data base program. EDITOR'S NOTE: This would be great for Special Education classes!!
