INCREDIBLE
EQUATIONS

Incredible Equations
1) Start with the date on the calendar.
2) Write it on a 9x12 piece of construction paper folded in half
and pin to a front board.
3) Students give an equation that equals that number.
For example: 25 20+5, 30-5, 50-25, etc.
4) Write the equations on the paper and leave up for the day.
TEACHER'S NOTE: Students start out with simple adding and subtracting,
but progress to multiplication and division and more than two numbers
(10+10) +5 etc. I was amazed at the thinking skills of some of my students.
They would figure out the equations at home and come to
school with them.
I do this all year long. After doing the dates of the month for awhile I switch to going from 1 to 100. Later in the year I put restrictions, such as only multiplication and division. The upside of this was when the class took the essential learning test the next year, they did really well on the Math part.
