READING IDEAS: Get your students to read!
Author: Galit K. Fraser
To get students to read more, try this interesting project.
1) Each book in your class becomes worth so many points.
2) A book is worth more points when it is a more complicated
book (higher reading level) or very long.
3) All books are assigned values and any books brough in from
outside must be checked and given a point value.
4) Each time a student reads a book, they must fill out a
worksheet about it to ensure they have actually read it.
5) If the student fills out the worksheet correctly,
they will receive the points that book was worth.
TEACHER'S NOTE: All our points were posted on a bulletin board from
the start of the school year. Meanwhile, we wrote
letters to businesses asking for donations.
For example: Someone wrote to Hershey and received
two cases of kisses.
At the end of the school year, we held an auction
for all of the donations -- we had t-shirts, hats,
candy, gum, books, school supplies, gift
certificates, cash, etc.
6) A Studnet can only bid however many points they have and
each time they buy something, those points are deducted
from their total.
It is a lot of FUN!
TEACHER'S NOTE: If anyone would like me to elaborate, I can
certainly do that. (E-Mail above)
