                   FOREST UNIT: Animal Identification

Author: Kathy Thomas Kat3BAli@aol.com

TEACHER'S NOTE: I use this for my third graders, It comes from the
work The Big Snow (can't remember the author).

  Procedure:

        1) Each student receives an index card with the name of an
         animal in the story.

        2) The teacher reads the story.

        3) Students bring the index card and put it on the chalk ledge
when they hear the animal in the story.

This helps them focus on the story and makes them an
                active part of the lesson.

        4) Once the story is finished, they can draw their animal.

        5) As part of the discussion determine how the animals finds food
in the forest, hibernate or migrate.

        6) Compare these animals to desert animals and the conditions
        there.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Students could be assigned reading parts
if time allows. Also, this activity could be modified for various
  grade levels and topic areas.
