MATH LESSONS: Learn while you eat

PIZZA PARTIES
In my behavior management program they can earn pizza parties.
I know the price of pizza and number of slices in a pizza. I make
them order the number of slices that they want and then they have
to figure the cost of each slice and their total bill.
It is a fun way to throw math into their reward. Kids know
upfront that they must buy the pizza. Of course I make private
arrangements for any student that has financial problems.
M&M Math
We also use M & M's for mean, mode, and median. I buy enough
small packages for teams of 2. Usually get them through our
concession stand for cost. They have to chart the colors on a
chart and find the mean, mode, and median.
Then we chart it on the board for all the packages and do a total
mean, mode, and median. Then of course they get to eat them. They
love it. Amazing how much they stay on task when the reward of
being done is eating M & Ms.
Use Flyers to Combine Reading and Math
I also go to stores and pick up flyers. Then make a shopping list
and have the students shop in the flyers. It is part reading and
part math. They love this at Christmas. (toys)
Of course I have to teach how to figure tax prior to the lesson.
I put a twist on this last Christmas. I had them make out a
shopping list for their family for Christmas--then gave them a
certain amount of money and they had to use the flyer to fill
their list and stay within budget.
Was fun, but took several class periods and was time consuming
to grade.
TEACHER'S NOTE: I have many more ideas. If you want them email me
personally. (See above for e-mail)
