The New House:
A "Real Life" Math Exercise

Author: Kimberly Ramsey
Grade: Middle concepts = multiplication, area, money, time
Materials:
Varies
Activity Time: 5 30-min. periods

Teacher's Note: This unit was created for use with a special ed. math group of 6th-8th graders. They used the math skills we
were learning to determine such things as

  1. how much it would cost for concrete for the foundation if
    the area was 26x42 and concrete was $5 a square foot;
  2. how much they would have to pay a painter who charges $11
an hour for 40 hours of work,
  3. how much wood would be needed for the floors in the house,
    etc.
  4. The unit is five lessons long, designed to last one week.
The final lesson involves calculating the total cost of the house that was built.

Teacher's Note: I would be happy to send a free copy of the
unit, including teacher's pages, worksheets, and answer key,
to anyone who e-mails me (with your snail mail address) at jkramsey@hotmail.com.

EDITOR'S NOTE: This unit sounds great -- It will allow us to put some "real life" experiences into our lesons.
