SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS

As the Superintendent of Schools, you will act as the Chief Executive Officer of the Regional School Board and have overall accountability for the efficient management and operation of the regional office and the public schools in the region–including program delivery, support services, financial administration, systems administration, technological innovation, management and supervision of all Board employees and relations with government, stakeholders, the public and the media. You will provide a link between the day-to-day administration of the Region and the Board Chair, and oversee the planning and development of the Board’s goals and priorities.

You have demonstrated the ability to integrate strategic thinking into operational plans and bring key stakeholders on-side. You are a person of vision who promotes innovation by setting challenging organizational targets and effectively managing resources. You understand how education is financed, and you have dealt with the impact of declining enrolment as it relates to program and student services delivery.

You are an effective communicator who has demonstrated a commitment to meaningful consultation, collaboration, and outstanding social awareness in a diverse cultural environment. As an ideal candidate–you should possess a Masters or Ph.D in Education (Education Administration preferred) or an equivalent education; a valid Teacher’s License/Certificate; ten years relevant experience in progressively more responsible leadership and management roles; experience as a Senior Official with a School Board; and a minimum of five years teaching and/or school-based administration experience. Additional training in Educational Management/Leadership would be an asset.

The Cape Breton Victoria Regional School Boards call for applications for employment for the following Ventilation Person. Candidates will be expected to possess the ability to deal effectively with students and co-workers. All candidates must possess a Valid First Aid and CPR course or if hired agree to obtain same prior to starting work.

The following are minimum qualifications and abilities for all of the posted positions:

Journeyman Sheet Metal worker, licensed in Nova Scotia or Mechanical engineering Technologist eligible for membership in SCETNS.
Understanding of HVAC systems and sequences of operation of same
Ability to read mechanical drawings
Ability to troubleshoot problems with building HVAC systems
Ability to install building ventilation fans, air conditioning units and heat recovery systems
Ability to perform preventive maintenance on building HVAC systems, as per manufacturer’s recommendations.
Understanding of building DDC controls.
Fall Arrest, Confined spaces, WHIMIS, First Aid certificates
Valid driver’s license

Copy of Diploma or certificate must accompany application.

I am writing to inform you of the second annual Premier’s Power of Positive Change Awards. This award program was an overwhelming success last year, with close to one hundred applications, showcasing the incredible positive work by students across the province of Nova Scotia.

The premier’s Power of Positive Change Award is an exciting opportunity to highlight the wonderful work that our students in Nova Scotia, from grades primary to 12, are doing in their schools and communities to promote positive change and making a difference in our province. This work is inspirational and often contagious. Up to ten students in Nova Scotia will be awarded a $2000 bursary to be used for post secondary educational opportunities, following graduation from senior high school.

Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board Faces

Budget Uncertainties for the 2010-2011 School year

Sydney, NS: - Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board is again projecting significant cuts to their educational budget. Nova Scotia’s education partners – school boards, teachers, administrators and parents are seeking a 3.6 per cent increase for public education in the Province’s 2010/11 budget. A lobby campaign entitled “Save Grade 2” has been launched by the partners to emphasize the impossible choices the system is facing.

Ron Marks, president of the Nova Scotia School Boards Association, stated, “The primary goal of the campaign is to reinforce the Government’s belief that continued investment in public education will chart the course for the future economic prosperity of the province.”

Lorne Green, Board Chair, stated, The Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board is committed to making the best choices when it comes to our student’s future, but sometimes these choices are difficult to make.” He added that the areas of concern for CBVRSB are:

· CBVRSB has the highest student decline in all the Boards in Nova Scotia (600 students each year over the last 10 years);

· Increased class sizes;

· Increase in the number of multi-age grades;

· Elimination of Math and Literacy mentors;

· Reduction of Professional Development opportunities;

· Concerns about building maintenance funding;

· Reduction of book budget by $500,000;

· Reduction of 42 teachers;

· 12% reduction in budget items overall;

· Use of a very small budget surplus to balance 2009/10 budget;

· Instability of energy, heath and transportation costs.

Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board is very active in this lobbying campaign, ie. meeting with editorial boards, conference calls with other School Boards in the Province, etc., and they will be insisting that there is adequate resource capacity to meet current, as well as projected, needs into 2011. Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board has a responsibility to meet student’s outcomes as mandated by the Department of Education.
