Scope

This policy applies to Bus Drivers and outlines the emergency evacuation policy.

 

Purpose

To ensure all bussed students of the Board are exposed to the emergency evacuation process in case of an emergency.

 

Policy Statement

It is the policy of the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board to have all bussed students of the Board do an emergency evacuation once in a school term as is required under the Motor Carrier Act of the Province of Nova Scotia.

Authorization

This policy has been authorized by the Board under motions number....

 

Responsibility

It is the responsibility of the Director of Operational  Services to ensure that this policy and administrative procedures are implemented.

 

Implementation

The Coordinator of Transportation will implement the policy and administrative procedures.

       

Procedures

1)         Each bus driver will conduct an emergency evacuation drill in accordance with the Nova Scotia Public Utility and Review hand book (Page 10).

2)         There are three methods of evacuations practiced by the students which are as follows:

            A)        Front evacuation.

            B)        Rear evacuation.

            C)        Split evacuation (Half Front Door/Half Back Door)

3)         In the back door evacuation, the driver appoints two children to leave first and stand sideways next to the emergency doors so that the students leaving the bus can use their shoulders as a help down to the ground.

4)         The driver appoints two leaders who leave the bus next and all the students will follow to a safe location.

5)         The driver follows the usual emergency procedure as indicated in Policy No. TR109 (School Bus Accidents Policy), TR119 and (Mechanical Failure of School Buses).

6)         A record is kept by driver, of each evacuation and the record of School Bus Evacuation Drill Form No. 105TD) is completed and given to the Head Driver who, in turn, gives it  to the Transportation Secretary for filing.

School Bus Emergency Evacuation Drills Must Be Conducted for Each School prior to October 15th of each school year.  The drills will be coordinated by your area Head Driver.
