This policy applies to any personnel using School buses for out-of-town trips for students.



To ensure that the safety of students and staff is maintained while traveling out-of-town and that provincial regulations are maintained at all times.


Policy Statement

It is the policy of the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board to ensure that the safety of students and staff is maintained, at all times, while traveling out-of-town and that provincial regulations are maintained.

It is the responsibility of the Director of Operational Services to ensure that this policy and administrative procedures are implemented.



The Coordinator of Transportation will implement the policy and administrative procedures.



All out-of-town bus trips will be requested and organized through the office of the Coordinator of Transportation after approval from the Coordinator of School Services.




Forward the application for the Field Trips (Form 1a), to the Coordinator of School Services for approval.  If the trip is approved, the request is forwarded to the Coordinator of Transportation’s Office.

Coordinator of Transportation:

After the approved request is received, the Coordinator of Transportation or his/her designate, will approve the bus for the scheduled trip, if there is space and bus(s) are available on the dates requested.

Pay the wages and expenses of the driver according to provisions in the collective agreements.  Bills the school for kilometres driven for each event.  Provides valid credit cards, log book and a list of emergency numbers to the driver.

Supplies Board-owned buses and a qualified driver, where available.

Bus Drivers:

Out-of-Town Trips:

Transport students, as required by the staff representative.

Be available, when requested, to transport students to and from events that take place during an out-of-town trip.

Maintain a list of all passengers.

Follow all aspects of the National Safety Code with regards to hours of work.

Report to the Transportation Office the number of kilometres used on the trip and return the credit cards, log book and emergency list, along with any credit slips.

Policy Review

This policy will be reviewed by Director of Operational Services within three years from the authorization date.
