This policy provides procedures for dealing with students or employees with Acquired Immune Deficiency (AIDS).
To ensure that all personnel are aware of the appropriate guidelines to follow in dealing with students or staff infected with AIDS.
It is the policy of the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board that in dealing with:
1. STUDENTS WITH AIDS
1.1 Students infected with HIV/AIDS have the right to attend regular classes.
1.2 The identity of a student with HIV/AIDS will be protected.
1.3 Where the physical condition or behaviour of a student infected with HIV/AIDS poses a health risk, alternative instruction will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
2. EMPLOYEES WITH AIDS
2.1 The identity of an employee with HIV/AIDS will be protected.
2.2 Employees infected with HIV/AIDS have the right to continue their employment.

It is the responsibility of the Director of Programs and Student Services (Students) and the Director of Human Resources (Employees) to ensure that this policy and administrative procedures are implemented.
The Coordinator of School Services will implement the policy and administrative procedures.
1. Information on HIV/AIDS should be provided as part of the health education curriculum at appropriate levels.
2. In-service education should be made available to employees concerning HIV/AIDS and other potentially communicable diseases.
This policy will be reviewed by the Director of Programs and Student Services within three years from this authorization date.
