Adoption Date: October 25, 1999
Revised: January 2005
To provide guidelines for governing the Suspension of Students from School Buses.
To ensure the safety of all passengers traveling on Board-owned buses and to provide consistent procedures which comply with all regulations in dealing with unacceptable student behaviour on the school bus.
It is the policy of the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board that students who interfere with the safety of bus travel or refuse to comply with rules and regulations for travelling on school buses will be suspended from travelling on the bus. Suspensions which exceed five (5) days are under the jurisdiction of the Student Discipline Review Committee.
Suspension of Students Policy #PSS 246
This policy has been authorized by the Board under motions number....
It is the responsibility of the Director of Programs and Student Services to ensure that this policy and administrative procedures are implemented.
The Coordinator of School Services, in communication and collaboration with the Coordinator of Transportation, will implement the policy and administrative procedures.
- The bus driver is responsible for monitoring student behaviour and maintaining good order on the school bus. If a pupil refuses to follow the directions of the bus driver or refuses to comply with rules and regulations while on the bus, the bus driver must report the incident (in writing) within a 24-hour period to the Principal. The Principal, in conjunction with the Coordinator of Transportation may suspend a pupil from travelling on the school bus for up to five days when, in his/her judgement, the behaviour of the pupil while on the bus endangers the safety of others.
- Should an extreme case of misbehaviour occur on the bus which, in the opinion of the bus driver, endangers the safety of others using the bus, the bus driver will pull the bus to the side of the road, turn on the amber flashing lights and seek assistance in contacting the police. Under no circumstances is the bus driver permitted to discharge a pupil from the bus enroute.
- When a pupil is suspended from school bus use, the Principal shall forthwith notify the parents by telephone. This notification will be followed by notice, in writing, of this suspension, to the pupil, parents or guardian, Coordinator of Transportation, and the Coordinator of School Services.
- A suspension of more than five (5) days is made by the Student Discipline Review Committee and the Coordinator of Transportation. Once done, Form II is sent to all concerned. The Board Committee will hear any appeal.
This policy will be reviewed by Director of Programs and Student Services within three years from the authorization date.
