CAPE BRETON-VICTORIA REGIONAL SCHOOL BOARD CELEBRATES NEW GLACE BAY SCHOOL WITH SOD-TURNING CEREMONY

Sydney, NS – After a lot of hard work and planning, the residents of Glace Bay are celebrating as construction begins in the spring of 2009, on a new $16-million dollar Jr. High School. Premier Rodney MacDonald, Education Minister Karen Casey, Mayor John Morgan, Superintendent Ed Davis, MLA Dave Wilson and Myrtle Turnbull-Campbell, Chair of the CBVRSB Management Committee joined school, board and community representatives today to launch the construction of a junior high school in Glace Bay. The new two-storey school will be 75,000 square feet in size, and will accommodate up to 650 students from Grades 7-9. The new school will replace two existing older schools, Morrison Jr. High and St. Michael ′s Jr. High. The school scheduled for completion in the fall of 2010, will be constructed on Wallace Road in Glace Bay.

There are seven spaces remaining in the first cohort between the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board and Saint Francis Xavier University in the Master of Education in Curriculum or Leadership with a focus on Middle School Mathematics Pedagogy.

QMJHL Draft - Contest for the Kids

‘Being Fit is Fun ’

Task: To draw a picture/colouring of people having fun while being physically active.

Rules:

  • Open to school children between grades 3 -6.
  • Only one entry per child is permitted.
  • Entries must be received on white, 8 x 11 sized paper.
  • Entries should include the child ′s name, address, phone number and school on the back.
  • Contest will open on Thursday, May 8, 2008.
  • Entries must be received no later than 4 p.m. on Thursday, May 29, 2008.
  • All entries must be dropped off at the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles Administration Office, 481 George Street 4th Floor, Centre 200, Sydney, NS, by the individual entrant or a teacher/principal on behalf of their class/school, or mailed to P.O. Box 8, Sydney, NS, B1P 6G9 . Entries sent through the mail must be received by the deadline date noted above.
  • One winner will be chosen from all entries by the organizing committee of the Draft.
  • All entries will be displayed during the Draft.
  • The winner will be contacted by the Draft committee at which time arrangements will be made for the winner (and their parent/legal guardian) to sign a photo consent release form. If the parent/guardian does not agree to sign the form, the Draft Committee reserves the right to choose an alternate winner.
  • Entries may be posted in a public forum(s) i.e. Cape Breton Post website.
  • As this is a school based activity, parental consent for participation in the draft is covered under that umbrella.

Prize:

The winner will receive four VIP tickets and seating at the Draft on Saturday, June 7, 2008. They will also receive a Cape Breton Screaming Eagles jersey and have their photo taken with the first overall draft pick.

Distribution:

  • Through the CBVRSB.
  • Through publication in the Cape Breton Post and on its website.

CAPE BRETON-VICTORIA REGIONAL SCHOOL BOARD DISAPPOINTED IN RECOMMENDATIONS FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION REVIEW PANEL ON TEACHER EDUCATION IN NOVA SCOTIA

Sydney, NS : - Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board is extremely disappointed in the recommendations of the Review Panel on Teacher Education. Superintendent, Ed Davis stated that, ‘the report has missed the target, our expectations were more focused on the assessment of services extended by existing B.Ed. institutions, ’ says Mr. Ed Davis.
