A meeting of the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School board was called to order today beginning at 7:00 p.m.

CORRESPONDENCE:

Mr. George Boudreau, Director of Financial Services distributed correspondence received from the office of the Minister of Education, Honorable Minister Karen Casey. It was noted that as of May 16, 2008 we have sixty days to file our budget with the Department.

SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT:

Superintendent Davis presented his report which was distributed to those in attendance. (see attachment). Highlights of his report included the impact and repercussions of the budget on our Board. The monthly theme of his report is dedicated to parents and children within the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board's communities. The Superintendent's report can be found on the Board website at www.cbv.ns.ca

NSSBA REPORT:

Commissioner Campbell provided an oral report. Highlights of her report included the tender for paper and digital duplicating paper. The Education Committee had a presentation regarding assessment. She also noted that there is a shortage of family studies teachers however it is the hope of Mount Saint Vincent University to revive this program in order to address the shortage. She also recognized a strong resolution has been forwarded for the AGM regarding funding for School Boards.

DIRECTOR OF THE REGIONAL EDUCATIONAL SERVICES REPORT:

The Director of Regional Educational Services, Mr. Jim Burton distributed and reviewed his report. Highlights of his report included the proposed visit of the Lieutenant Governor General to Glace Bay High on Tuesday, June 10th at 10:00 a.m. He conveyed to the Minister of Education that the Board would like to meet (Copy of the report is attached to the original minutes)

NEW BUSINESS:

a. Commissioner Ruelland - MacDonald Elementary - Thanked the Board for their full cooperation over the years and noted that he understands and appreciates that the Board will support his efforts in achieving a gymnasium for the elementary school.

b. Commissioner Morrison - Superintendent's evaluation - She advised that the committee which presently exists under the guidance of Mr. Burton, Director of the Regional Educational Services would like to proceed.

c. Commissioner Keagan - Memorial High School- Recognized the efforts of the Vocational program at Memorial High School. He noted that these programs will assist in future economic development in our area.

d. Commissioner Lynk - Shipyard Elementary - He noted that due to the budget restraints provided by the Department of Education for the 2008 - 2009 school year a situation exists at Shipyard Elementary. He recognized the high number of students that need assistance in some of these classes and the implications it will have within the classroom.

that we write to the Department of Education regarding our concerns re: lack of educational funding for 2008-2009. . .

Commissioner Green would like the Board Chair to contact other Board Chairs across the province so that we can work together in addressing an appeal for more funding from the Department of Education.

Superintendent Davis noted that at his meeting last week all the Superintendents expressed their concern and disappointment however they were advised at that time that no changes will take place. Some suggestions were made by the Department however these suggestions are not sustainable for our Board.

Commissioner Lynk would also like to see correspondence to the Premier of Nova Scotia along with all long Members of the Legislative Assembly.

Commissioner Keagan questioned whether the Board has at any time requested further funding from the Federal government.

Commissioner Ruelland noted that it is not only Shipyard Elementary is effected by these funding cuts that other schools such as MacDonald Elementary and John Bernard Croak V.C. Memorial are effected too. He would like to see a review of all our schools in the fall.

Commissioner Pierrard questioned the expense for fuel should be one of the top priorities for our Board.

e. Commissioner Tilley - Mr. Jack Toomey - He recognized the efforts of Mr. Toomey and wished to see correspondence forwarded to him for his efforts.

f. Superintendent Davis - Spelling Bee - recognized the efforts of a Cabot student - in her participation in the Spelling Bee.
