Capital Construction Committee Visitation

The School Capital Construction Committee made a visit to the Cape Breton Victoria Regional School Board on Monday, September 15, 2008. The mandate of the Committee is to deal with Capital Construction requests of all school boards. We sent our list to the Committee in July 2008. Committee member met with our staff and board and visited 12 sites contained in our submission. After their visits, to all boards, scoring will take place and a report generated with recommendations for the School Construction and Addition /Alterations projects for the Minister′s consideration.

We had seven members visit our sites along with Paul Oldford and Ambrose White. A presentation was made to the Committee at lunch time with several school board members present along with Senior Staff. We received a very good hearing and look forward to a positive response to our request.

Riverview High and Sydney Academy High – Additions/Alterations Update

There was a tremendous amount of work done at Riverview and Sydney Academy over the summer months. The gymnasium at Sydney Academy remains to be completed and, hopefully, it will be done by the end of October.

The Riverview project is near completion to this point. The new Guidance offices etc will be completed and furnished in early September.

Further reports on this project will be forth coming in October.

Summer Painting

There was a great deal of painting done in our schools by students this past summer. Some of this will be referred to in the Maintenance Report that follows.

Technology Report – September 2008

S.A.P. Daily Tasks

Since June we went through all the buildings upgrading Deepfreeze on approximately 5000 computers in the classrooms. We also upgraded servers, giving them larger hard drive capacity. In total we did 11 upgrades - as well as complete rebuilds at Glace Bay High School. We also did routine maintenance repairs in all buildings across the CBVRSB. This also includes a major virus at Shipyard Elementary - inventory in a number of schools.

Internet Connectivity

Eastlink internet installs are ongoing. We have seven schools left to change over to the Eastlink fiber optics circuit. This is making a vast difference in school′s internet bandwidth.

Computers for Schools

Since June, the Technology Department with help from Computers for Schools installed over 190 computers in our board. This includes a complete lab in Malcolm Munroe, John Bernard Croak and over 70 in Glace Bay High for a lab. Also, upgrading of obsolete equipment and approximately 13 machines went for donation.

Refresh

During the summer months we did extensive P3 refresh: 34 computers in Jubilee, 32 computers in Riverview, network upgrade in Riverside and installation of assorted peripherals in remaining schools.

Boularderie

We installed and configured over 40 computers - also, cameras, laptops, etc.

I.E.I.

We installed and configured over 100 complete computer systems.

Transportation Report – September 2008

On September 2, 2008 an In-service was held at Malcolm Munroe Jr. High for bus drivers and bus aids. This was a welcome back and start up meeting.

Stephanie Johnston, Manager of ACAP Nova Scotia did a presentation on anti-idling. This presentation was the beginning of our campaign to reduce green gas omissions around school grounds. Along with this presentation was a hands on display of the new vehicles which were added to the fleet for the new school year. The new vehicles are manufactured with exhaust systems that do not tolerate excessive idling.

Drivers were introduced to an updated bus routing software that is now web based. They can view their own bus run, update the run and submit it to the Transportation Department for approval. This has proven to be popular with some of the drivers.

The plan is to elaborate on the Anti-Idling Program for the October In-service. The guest speaker is expected to confirm the presentation time and date in the near future.
