Transportation Department Report

October 20 – 24, 2008 was School Bus Safety Awareness Week in Nova Scotia. The Transportation Department, with the help of two bus drivers, took their safety program to four schools using Buster the Bus. The schools taking part in the program this year were: Florence Elementary, Mountainview Elementary, Shipyard Elementary and Coxheath Elementary. We were able to have 902 students participate in the program this year. Also the Coordinator of Transportation, Colleen MacMullin, and two bus drivers, Brain Curtis and Lloyd Johnson, did thirty second public service announcements on four of the local radio stations that were aired several times a day for the entire week.

The official launch of the School Bus Safety Awareness Week took place on Monday, October 20, 2008, at Membertou Elementary School. This was a joint effort between Cape Breton Victoria Regional School Board and the Membertou Board. The campaign theme was STOP ON RED – KIDS AHEAD. Cape Breton Regional Police, RCMP and Public Utility Board Inspectors participated in school bus evacuations and road ride delivery of safety pamphlets. The campaign was highly successful and a great deal of awareness was demonstrated to the public on safety for children traveling on school buses in the general area.
