A meeting of the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School board was called to order today beginning at 7:00 p.m.

(5)     BUSINESS ARISING FROM MINUTES:

(6)     CORRESPONDENCE:

Minister of Education, Ms. Judy Streatch – Board member Professional Development Fund – She wishes to clarify a section of the stipend report in the Education Act.  She noted that any unused Board member professional development funds cannot be transferred to any other Board member nor can it be transferred from one year to the next. 

However, unused funds as of March 31/09 can be transferred to the supplementary fund for Professional Development.   Any balances in the supplementary fund as of March 31st will be carried forward from one year to the next.

Correspondence from the NSSBA with regards to Resolutions.  It was noted that each Board is requested to provide two resolutions.  The recommendation of the Board Chair was to bring this issue forward to the two respective committees for discussion.



(7)     SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT:

Superintendent Davis distributed to those in attendance his report (see attachment).  Highlights of his report included the issue of rising costs and the limited resources considering the economic climate which is facing our Board.  He noted that the Board will be facing some serious challenges in the next fiscal year.  He also addressed the issue of School sites, School Advisory Committees and Home & Schools and their roles in supporting and strengthening our public schools. The theme for this month is “Dedicated to Parents/Guardians and Students’.The Superintendent’s report can be found on the Board website at www.cbv.ns.ca

The Board Chair noted that the month of February was an extremely busy month.  He highlighted that it is African Heritage Month and that our schools and community groups were actively celebrating and educating the students in our Board.

(10)     NSSBA REPORT:

Commissioner Fraser provided a report which is attached to the original minutes.  Mr. Ron Marks and Mr. Ken Meech were called upon to provide an overview of their role in the request for additional funding for Education in our Board.  Mr. Marks noted that the Joint Partnership has been meeting with the media and with all Boards across the province to achieve a united front to achieve this goal.


(11)       DIRECTOR OF THE REGIONAL EDUCATIONAL SERVICES REPORT:

The Director of Regional Educational Services, Mr. Jim Burton reviewed his report.  Highlights of his report included the Labour Market Bulletin, Active Kids-Healthy Kids, Schedule of Events, Learning for Life-Gap Analysis-Student Services and Best Practices in Drug Education. 

He noted that this is African Heritage Month and our Board are fortunate to have the first African Nova Scotian member elected as Board Chair.
