Sponsor Group Meetings

The monthly Sponsor Group meetings for Sydney Academy and Riverview took place this month.  Plans for the next phases of work at both sites for this summer were reviewed.  Representatives from Operations, the schools, architectural firms and the Department of Education were present.

School Cancellation – Winter Weather

Gunn’s Leadership Consulting Services are doing a study on the issue of school cancellations in winter weather.  They plan to collect information from all school boards, particularly from those who are responsible for cancelling school, review policies, etc.  They plan to look at what is happening in other provinces and review criteria and standards of safety when making cancellations.  They may develop recommendations for consideration by the Department of Education and Nova Scotia’s school boards on how the policies and procedures may be improved and on how the levels of public understanding and acceptance may be increased.

Colleen MacMullin, Coordinator of Transportation will be our liaison with this group.

There has been an increase in vandalism in certain areas of CBVRSB recently.  This is an ongoing concern - schools, Operations staff and police work together to curb this expensive problem for our board.

Summer Work

Operations staff is in the process of preparing for our summer work schedules.  Plans and scope of work, as well as costs, are being developed so a final schedule can be put in place.

We also hope to hire students to do mowing, painting, etc. this summer which complements the great work of our regular employees of the Operations Department.

Budget Deliberations

We are still working through budget deliberations as a board.  The Operations Department, as well as other departments, may be affected by our shortfall in revenue for the upcoming fiscal year.
