COORDINATOR OF HUMAN RESOURCE SERVICES (NSTU)
The Coordinator of Human Resource Services presented to the Speech Language class at Dalhousie University on November 27th. These students will graduate in the spring of 2010 and many expressed interest in obtaining employment in the school system.
The Coordinator of Human Resources is assisting staff from Cape Breton University to provide placements for the students enrolled in the university’s first Bachelor of Education class.

Workplace Education Committee
Instructors have been hired for two computer courses (basic and intermediate) which will be offered to our non –teaching staff. Courses will run on Saturdays at Riverview High School for ten weeks beginning November 14th .
Teacher Assistants were re-certified in First Aid on the Professional Development Day in October. Special thanks go out to the hosting sites of Glace Bay High, Shipyard, Jubilee, and Baddeck for their help and support.
Professional Development for non-teaching staff of our administration buildings took place at the board office where staff participated in a session from Power Talk Communications around communicating with others, communication styles and the power of a positive attitude.
On November 30th, Professional development was held for teacher assistants at Sherwood Park and topics covered and presenters included:
Cst. Steve Nagy – Drugs, Drug Awareness and what to look for
Bonnie Nicholson – Cyber Violence
VON, Elizabeth MacDonald – Diabetes, Anaphylaxis
Jeannie Stone - new Department of Education Teacher Assistant Guidelines
Professional Development for secretaries was held at Brookland provided by Sandra Kelly and Debra Murray which also focused on communication and power of positivity.
OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY
A workshop was held for recently hired casual cleaners regarding the HNI virus. Casual staff was informed of the Board’s Pandemic Plan and the measures currently be taken by the Board to keep staff and students safe.
Health and Safety Committee Training
A workshop will be held on December 14th with new members of the site-based Health and Safety Committees. During this workshop, a review of pertinent legislation as well as the roles and responsibilities of committee members will be discussed. A similar workshop will be held for staff North of Smokey on December 8, 20009.
Workshop – W.C.B.
A workshop was recently held by the Workers Compensation Board explaining to employers the concept of the recently launched initiative, ‘large workplace team’. This team provides to employers expertise in areas such as prevention, return to work, ergonomics, etc.
