Highlights of the Regular Board Meeting, February 22, 2010
Memorial High School

  • Ron Marks, President, Nova Scotia School Boards Association, spoke to the Board on the “Save Grade 2” initiative. He stated that the primary goal of the campaign is to reinforce the government’s belief that continued investment in public education will chart the course for the future economic prosperity of the province.

  • Dr. Davis informed the Board that the local MLA’s have been contacted but a meeting date has yet to be finalized.

  • Dr. Davis appreciated the support from staff, board members, school advisory council presidents and parents/guardians at the recent meeting with Finance Minister, Graham Steele, in Whitney Pier. Their message was clear – we can suggest some ideas to government on their balance initiatives, but our priority is to adequately fund the educational services to children who are currently in the classrooms today.

  • Dr. Davis added that there are three things that the public who value education should do: GET INFORMED, GET PASSIONATE; AND GET INVOLVED!

  • Representatives of the school board, the regional policy force, the health services, the R.C.M.P. and the pharmacists met and started preliminary talks about the increasing levels of illegal drugs in our community. It is the interest of this steering committee to create an awareness of the drug problem, and to develop a working paper to help advise our communities of the challenges facing them, and the solutions to some of these issues.

  • Jim Burton, Regional Education Officer, distributed information on the following: Accreditation Database, Mentor Program Framework, Labour Workforce Development – Adult Learning, Imagine the Possibilities and Back-to-Balance.

  • Chair, Lorne Green, informed the Board that Minister of Education, Marilyn More, will be visiting the area on March 2, and will be meeting with the Principal of Holy Angels High and doing a site visit.

  • The Board was presented to the Board from the Minister of Education, Marilyn More, informing the Board that the school calendar will not be amended to suit the Canada Winter Games that will be held in Halifax during the 2010-2011 school year.

  • A motion was made by the Board to direct their NSSBA Director or designate to vote against the forthcoming dues structure.
