REGULAR BOARD MEETING

(1) CALL TO ORDER:

A Special Board meeting of the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board was called to order today beginning at 7:00 p.m.

a. Mr. George Boudreau, Director of Financial Services advised that correspondence was forwarded to Honorable Ramona Jennex, Minister of Education with regards to the forthcoming budget.

(7) SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT:

Superintendent White provided an oral report to those in attendance. He began his report with the request which was received from the Department of Education to engage in a planning exercise to deal with budgeted target figures. We, as a Board identified areas which we had no control such as provincial negotiated wage increases, fuel and electricity, to name a few. All Board’s participated in this exercise and brought forward tentative initiatives which would have to be implemented in order to achieve a balanced budget. He advised that we are presently and anxiously awaiting to hear from the Department of Education on what the status of our budgets will be so that we can proceed in a responsible and prudent fashion.

He expressed his support in working with administration and the elected School board members as a team effort to meet the challenges which our Board will be facing to meet the commitments of students and staff within our Board.

In conclusion, he acknowledged the support and mentorship which he has received from his predecessor, Dr. N.E. Davis.

(8) BOARD CHAIR REPORT:

The Board Chair Lorne Green presented his report. In his report included the hard and diligence work of the Superintendent Selection Committee. He congratulated and expressed his full cooperation in working with Mr. Ambrose White, newly appointed Superintendent of our Board. He then spoke regarding the recent budget exercise which our Board were asked to participate in. He expressed his disappointment and disgust in recent discussions and public release’s from the Department of Education. He attended a meeting with the community of MacDonald Elementary to express his disappointment with regards to the budget discussions. Mr. Green will be meeting this week in Halifax with the Minister of Education to discuss this issue further.

Board Chair Lorne Green advised that to date we have not received any correspondence from the Department of Education with regards to Holy Angels High.

(10) NSSBA REPORT:

Commissioner Fraser congratulated Mr. White on his first public meeting as Superintendent of Schools. Commissioner Fraser presented a paper copy of his report. Included in his report were the EMI, the external committee report to board of directors, CACE Conference, the MOU Committee report and the National Conference which is scheduled for March, 2011 in Saskatoon. A copy of his report can be found attached to the original minutes.
