Highlights of the Regular Board Meeting Superintendent White spoke to the Board about the Levin Report, and the request to receive feedback from the report entitled “Steps to Effective and Sustainable Public Education in Nova Scotia”. He noted that there are 28 recommendations and suggestions for actions in the report based on five key areas of focus for the province. Those areas identified were: Reducing Failure Throughout the System Improving Daily Teaching, Learning and Assessment Practices Allowing More Things to “Count” as learning for Purposes of Earning School Credentials Building Public Support and Engagement Making Better use of Existing Facilities and Resources Superintendent White recognized and congratulated the Transportation Department for recently being awarded the Gerald W. Buchan Memorial Award for the carrier in Nova Scotia with the highest achievement at the Annual Transportation Conference. Superintendent White also recognized the dedication and service of Mr. John Astephen, Director of Programs and Student Services who has recently announced his retirement. He spoke of the long list of achievements during his tenure. Mr. White then congratulated Ms. Susan Kelley for being awarded the position of Director of Programs and Student Services. A motion was made by the Board to forward correspondence to the Utility Review Board to conduct a review of boundaries and the number of Board members which presently exist and to receive recommendations once the review is conducted.
