HIGHLIGHTS OF THE REGULAR BOARD MEETING
HELD AT SHERWOOD PARK EDUCATION CENTRE
OCTOBER 24, 2011
The meeting began with the opening reports from the Education and Management Committee reports. Included in the reports were Finance Department, Human Resources and Programs Report which were all accepted by the Board.
The Board accepted the following policies which will be posted on the Board website:
The Board and staff were pleased to have the opportunity to return seventeen Teacher Assistants from lay-off. This reduces the number from sixty-two to twenty-eight. The Board also approved the addition of four individuals to the casual tradespersons list – electricians.
Two pieces of correspondence were received from the Minister of Education, the Honorable Ramona Jennex with regards to proposed amendments to Section 52A of the Education Act. Mr. Boudreau, Director of Finance, also distributed correspondence from the Minister with regards to Kids and Learning First, a back-to-school newsletter from the Department of Education. This newsletter was distributed to the principal’s at the recently held Principals meeting to be further distributed to the students within their schools.
Included in the Superintendent’s report were comments regarding the recent in-camera session which was held with the Board regarding Honorable Ramona Jennex, Minister of Education task force on cyberbullying and bullying in general were discussed. He advised that the Board wish to react in a proactive manner. The Board supports all programs and efforts which are being offered in our schools and would like to enhance and cooperate fully with the schools and school communities.
Mr. White noted that the Department of Education are presently conducting a review of the Hogg Funding Formula which was initiated in 2000. He noted that the review could have serious implications for the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board. Further meetings will be held during the month of November.
Superintendent White advised those in attendance of the new Early Literacy Model which is replacing the Reading Recovery program. The new program is designed to support early elementary students who need assistance with oral language, reading and/or writing development. This will allow for more student assistance over a period of 15-18 week sessions.
The Implementation of the “Student Attendance Engagement Pilot” at the senior high school level. This was the result of recommendation #8 of the Minister of Education’s Response to Promoting Student Engagement: Report of the Minister’s Working Committee on Absenteeism and Classroom Climate. An Attendance Committee will monitor this pilot and an appeal panel will be put in place.
October is Mi’Kmaq History Month. The theme is “Sites of Cultural and Sacred Significance – Ta’n Tett Mawi-espite’tasikl Ta’n Telo’timk’.
