(1) CALL TO ORDER:


A meeting of the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School board was called to order today beginning at 7:00 p.m.

(6) CORRESPONDENCE:


Mr. Doug Peach, Corresponding Secretary for the Board reported correspondence was received by Commissioner Bain resigning from his position as Vice Chair of the Board and as a board member effective immediately. Commissioner Bain expressed his thanks to his colleagues and staff for their friendship and cooperation over the years.


Commissioner Morrison wished Keith Bain, MLA elect best of wishes on behalf of the Board and staff of the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board.

(7) SUPERINTENDENT′S REPORT:

Superintendent Davis presented his report which was distributed to those in attendance. (see original minutes for attachment). Some highlights included graduation ceremonies and the diplomas that our students will be receiving. This report can be found on our board website.


It was noted by Commissioner MacKinnon that recently Seton Elementary and Cape Smokey Elementary have been recognized by the Canadian Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance with the 2005-2006 School Recognition Award for their quality of Physical Education program. Formal correspondence will be forwarded to these schools on behalf of the Board.

(9) NSSBA REPORT:


Commissioner Campbell reported that the following highlights. Resolutions were reviewed and prioritized. It was agreed not to participate in the school charities. Unisource was awarded the paper tender for the province. Lead and Achieve has been postponed until July and will be included in the September report. A fall symposium will be held at the Dartmouth Holiday Inn.

(10) REGIONAL INSPECTORS REPORT:


The Regional Inspector reviewed his report with those in attendance (see attachment). Highlights of the report included thanks to the Central Office staff who work hard to reach the goals which are included in our Business Plan. He recognized the hard work and diligence of Mr. Doug Peach and noted that he has represented the Board the students of our Board and the province well throughout the years. He will be missed not only by our Board but by fellow colleagues across the province.


Thanks were expressed from the former Minister of Education Jamie Muir. A new Education minister was appointed today by the Premier MacDonald. The new minister appointed is Minister Casey who is an educator by profession.


Commissioner Morrison recognized Minister Muir and recognized Mr. Peach. He will be missed dearly by the Board chair and fellow Board members and staff.


Mr. Peach thanked the Board, Superintendent and staff. Thanks were expressed by Mr. Peach to Burton for his guidance through the years.

(11) NEW BUSINESS:

a. Commissioner Campbell - Status of the new Junior High in Glace Bay. Mr. Matheson noted that the committee has met and recognized new sites which was forwarded to the Department along with a request to expediate the process.

Mr. Burton spoke to Mr. Clattenburg and expressed in his conversations that the Board wished to see this process move forward as quickly as possible.

b. Commissioner Keagan - Thanked the government for the recent funding announcement for the trades program at Memorial High. He also expressed his thanks to staff and the Board for their support regarding this worthwhile endeavour.
