(1) CALL TO ORDER:

A meeting of the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School board was called to order today beginning at 7:05 p.m.

(7) SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT:

Superintendent Davis distributed to those in attendance his report (see attachment). Highlights of his report included fair and adequate funding and the impact on regional boards. He advised that he had visited North Highlands and Cape Smokey Elementary noting that he had made a promise to a student to reflect on the importance of homework. The title of his report included Homework-Too Much Too Little. He reminded those in attendance to review the Principal reports from our schools which are posted on our website. The Superintendent’s report can be found on the Board website at www.cbv.ns.ca. A copy of the report is attached to the original minutes.

(8) BOARD CHAIR REPORT:

The Board Chair, Commissioner Lorne Green thanked the staff in our schools and the administration in our schools for their cooperation in working towards the educational needs of our students. He encouraged the Board members to visit the schools. AESOP Survey Report has been distributed and a report will be compiled and presented at a later date. Commissioner Green noted that Holy Angels is presently in its 124th year of existence and the only all girl high school east of Montreal. He noted it fosters a warm welcome environment. It is a unique school. He spoke with regards to a review of adequate funding meeting which he has attended highlighting that we are the second lowest funded educational province in the country. It was noted that alternative methods of funding education will be reviewed.

He thanked the Board in deliberating the presentations by concerned parents and in dealing with some difficult decisions. He noted that parents/guardians have made very strong presentations.

(10) NSSBA REPORT:

Commissioner Fraser began his report with congratulatory remarks to Commissioner Keagan who secured a position as Vice-Chair of the finance committee with the NSSBA. Discussions ensued at his meeting regarding the establishment of Middle Schools in each Board. Other issues discussed at the recent meeting were the Absenteeism Report, Strategic Planning, Resolutions, School Board Member of the Year, the Atlantic Conference, Education Week and the up and coming AGM.

(11) DIRECTOR OF THE REGIONAL EDUCATIONAL SERVICES REPORT:


The Director of Regional Educational Services, Mr. Jim Burton provided his report. Highlights of his report included Passages and Prosperity, Mi’Kmaq History Month, Literacy-Creating a Balance and Child & Youth Strategy. He spoke of the significance of Holy Angels High and the recent celebration held at the school. Diversification within budgets was reiterated by Mr. Burton.
