STUDENT SERVICES

Sheila Kublek, Coordinator

Throughout the month of October the IPP Lead Team along with the support of the Student Services Consultant, Genevieve Richardson, provided IPP Modules One and Two information sessions to two teachers from each school in the Cape Breton Victoria Regional School Board. The facilitators provided each school with a binder of resources on IPP Modules One and Two to be shared with classroom and itinerant teachers. These sessions were very well received with many schools reporting that they were eager to share this knowledge and information to all teachers within the school.

The provincial Student Services Coordinators’ meeting was held in Baddeck on October 8th and 9th. Highlights of the meeting included the release of the updated Teacher Assistant Guidelines and the Assistive Technology DVD, and information on the use of Time Out rooms within school environments. As well, all coordinators were provided with copies of Life Skills: Supporting Student Success which is a guide to assist program planning teams in the identification of appropriate outcomes on the life skills continuum for individual students.

The updated Teacher Assistant Guidelines was presented to all school principals at the October principals’ meeting. The principals were very pleased to receive updated information on the roles and responsibilities of a teacher assistant, as well as, the roles and responsibilities of the classroom teacher and school administrators in regards to teacher assistants. Principals were also provided with an official form for requesting the support of a teacher assistant. They were advised of the procedure that is to be followed when seeking support of a teacher assistant for a student(s).

For the provincial conference day held on October 23rd the Acting Student Services Coordinator, Sheila Kublek joined Tracy Dove, Acting Assistive Technology Consultant to provide assistive technology sessions for the Nova Scotia School Counsellors’ Association. This conference was held at Sherwood Park Education Centre. The sessions provided information on the availability of and possible uses of low, mid and high technology.

Acting Assistive Technology Consultant (Tracey Dove)

Assessments: Assistive Technology assessments were performed at Jubilee, Shipyard, Memorial, Bras d’Or, Coxheath, Sherwood Park Education Center, Sydney Academy, G.D. Lewis, Glace Bay Elementary, T.L. Sullivan, Thompson, Cabot and Rankin. Based on the recommendations of the assessments appropriate hardware and software were implemented into students’ curriculum.

Professional Development: Professional Development sessions on Classroom Suite 4 were conducted with the learning center teachers from the following schools: Glace Bay High and Whitney Pier Memorial. Professional Development sessions on Kurzweil were conducted at the following schools: Sydney Mines Junior High, Malcolm Munroe, Glace Bay High, Breton Education Center, Sherwood Park Education Centre, MacLennan Jr. High and Baddeck.

Meetings: Various meetings were held to discuss the delivery of special services to schools and to discuss updates and initiatives.

An AT conference presentation was delivered on October 27, 2009 at SPEC as a part of the Nova Scotia School Counsellors Association.



Community Education (Heather Patterson)

Adult High School Program

The Adult High Schools are one again operating in four sites, New Waterford, Sydney Mines, Glace Bay and Sydney. We began the year with 183 students in our four schools with eleven teachers. Our current numbers are 147 students which should hold for our annual audit by the Department of Education.

There is an ongoing decrease in the age composition of our schools. For the past number of years the split between those 21 and over (NSSAL funded) and those who are under 21 (provincial count students) was around the 50% mark. Below is a current breakdown of age composition for our four sites.

You will see from the breakdown that the program is taking in younger students who would not technically be considered adults, and who bring new challenges to our program and teaching strategies. We are exploring professional development opportunities for our teachers to assist them in meeting the needs of the diverse learners we have.

I attended the NSSAL partnership meeting on November 2nd with representatives from the Department of Labour and Workforce Development who fund our adult highs. We were given new promotional material which outlines the variety of educational opportunities available through the Nova Scotia School for Adult Learners (NSSAL) as well as a cumulative statistical report on NSSAL students from 2006 to 2009. I will be providing copies of these documents for senior management in the coming days. As well I will be participating in a conference call on November 4th with senior department personnel and adult learning organizations in the province to discuss opportunities for program funding through the labour market agreements with Employment Nova Scotia. I will report further on that in next month’s report.

Adult Evening Classes

Adult evening classes are up and running in Sydney with one medical terminology class in Glace Bay. There are approximately 221 students in twelve different courses.

The demand for academic Math 12 and science courses continues to grow. This fall saw us with a waiting list for Math 12 and full classes in Chemistry 12 and Biology 12. GED preparation is also at capacity. The numbers reflect a growth in people applying for nursing programs at the community college and at CBU. Many of those currently enrolled are planning to take further courses with us in February. It could result in multiple classes of Math 12 and Chemistry 12. Keeping up the inquiries for these courses and finding space to house the students is a huge challenge that we continue to work through daily.



SIS/IT Professional Development Consultant (Kurt Kublek)

In the SIS (Student Information System) component of Mr.Kublek’s job, he has been very involved with accreditation at all three levels of our school system. He has been extracting data and presenting it to the schools’ accreditation teams in a manner relatively easy to understand and represent.

Furthermore, preparation and training for the first report cards has kept Mr.Kublek busy in the schools. There are many new people in the system that haven’t had the training and some people that just need refreshing. And while the work for the present is happening, Mr.Kublek has been working on a provincial team to implement a new provincial SIS for the future.

In the IT (Information Technology) branch of the position, Mr.Kublek has been working with schools to help them improve communication and learning. Mr.Kublek has continued to work with teachers and principals to improve and update their schools websites. He has also held site-based training sessions to create Moodle sites to be used as a tool for teachers. Moreover, Mr.Kublek has tried to keep involved with other departments and recently attended Literary Success in Wolfville, as a one of the representatives from the board.



IEI/PEBS Consultant (Trevor LeBlanc)

  • Our grade 12 roll out is underway. All computers have been delivered to our technology department and are currently being image and then to be delivered to the various schools
  • The software also has all been ordered and we are waiting its arrival.
  • Professional Development sessions will begin in the next couple of weeks once the software arrives.
  • Our focus will have teachers creating lesson plans that will be added to our website.
  • We will also be promoting and marketing the EBSCO Host for use at the elementary level but an emphasis will be placed on the high school level. We will be tracking the usage at each school. Our goal is to increase current usage by 25% by June 2010
  • In addition our IEI teachers will be exposed to using Moodle as a way of connecting teachers in specific subject areas to use as a forum to help support and share ideas in terms of technology in the classroom
  • Professional Development will be included for schools interested in learning more about Comic Life and Scratch(Computer programming software that allow students to create their own computer games)
  • There will be a RBTS (technology IEI) meeting on November 25,26th in Halifax
