SCHOOL BOARD MEETING

(1) CALL TO ORDER:

A Special Board meeting of the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board was called to order today beginning at 6:30 p.m.

(5) BUSINESS ARISING FROM MINUTES:

(6) CORRESPONDENCE:

Mr. George Boudreau, Director of Financial Services presented the correspondence regarding the Bartown Community Society. Ms. Bonita Gouthro, Project Coordinator forwarded correspondence requesting a letter of support of an upcoming event in the fall in celebration of Canada’s Naval Centennial.

(7) SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT:

Superintendent Davis distributed to those in attendance his report (see attachment). Highlights of his report included the forthcoming preliminary budget and the implementation of the Business Plan. He reiterated that the Board will deliberating throughout the Budget process in making several tough decisions. Fairness, logic and equity will be factored in all decisions. Small and rural schools in our Board were recognized as being part of the School review process and being an important community asset. He further advised that the Department of Education will be exploring possible approaches that could enhance the use of school facilities particularly in those which are underutilized due to declining enrollment.

The theme of this month’s report for parents, guardians and students is centered around student records.

(8) BOARD CHAIR REPORT:

The Board Chair Lorne Green provided an oral report. Included in his report were the school visits which he makes on a weekly basis. He also highlighted other issues such as the budget profile sheets which were recently received. He invited all Board members to visit our schools and recognize the efforts of our staff and students. He thanked the Human Resources Department for providing him the opportunity to attend the recent meetings scheduled with the principals.

He advised that the Holy Angels Committee will be reconvening next week to review further any options to sustain the school.

He further advised that the AESOP Committee have selected three schools to participate in a pilot project. They are Sydney Academy, Thompson Junior High and Mountainview elementary.

(10) NSSBA REPORT:

(11) DIRECTOR OF THE REGIONAL EDUCATIONAL SERVICES REPORT:

The Director of Regional Educational Services, Mr. Jim Burton reviewed his report. Highlights of his report included the Intersectoral Action on Children and Youth Physical Activity, Kids Can Play and Awards & Incentive Grants. Officials from the Department of Education will be visiting some of the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board schools along with the administrative office. (attached to the original minutes)

Mr. Burton further advised that effective the end of this month he will be retiring so this will be his last public meeting as an employee of the Department of Education. Mr. Burton thanked all those for their support throughout the years and noted that he enjoyed his role representing the Department.

Mr. Burton received a standing ovation from those in attendance.

12) NEW BUSINESS:

  1. Commissioner Keagan – Comments re: St. Mary, Florence – Commissioner Keagan spoke regarding the seamless move the students of St. Mary’s Elementary received during their transition into the Florence Elementary site. He wished to recognize the efforts of Ms. Marlene Bailey and Mr. David MacDonald, Florence staff, for this. It would be the expectation that the transition of the students and staff into Ferrisview Elementary will be the same.
  2. Commissioner Keagan – Recent Vocational competition – Commissioner Keagan recognized the efforts of staff and students from Memorial High School that competed in the recent vocational competition. They were successful in winning fifteen medals along with moving onto the national competition in June.
  3. Commissioner Tilley – Concern expressed over Coyote sightings – Commissioner Tilley expressed concern over the coyote sightings which have occurred near several of our schools. His concern was regarding any steps the Board may be considering regarding this issue. Board Chair Lorne Green noted that senior staff will be reviewing this issue.
  4. Commissioner Fraser – Superintendent’s Report – Commissioner Fraser commended Mr. Davis for his report while highlighting the mention of rural schools and the School Review process.
