SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT
JUNE, 2011

The Minister’s Report to Parents and Guardians was recently released. Each year, the Minister’s Report to Parents and Guardians focuses on a central theme. This year’s theme, ‘Student Engagement’, provides us with an opportunity to highlight the many and varied opportunities for building and maintaining active and productive school environments where students, teachers and communities participate in learning. It also includes our annual assessment and examination results. The Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board will hold a board-wide inservice on ‘Assessment’ in October for all of our teachers. This is a priority for the 2011-2012 school year.

On May 30th, I had the opportunity to attend the Lieutenant Governor’s Awards at Riverview High School. Her Honour, The Honourable Lieutenant Governor, Mayann E. Francis, O.N.S., DHumL, presented medals to sixteen students from eight of our high schools. These students demonstrated academic and leadership qualities that really do our board proud. They are all heavily involved in their various schools and communities, and I certainly want to congratulate all of them, their parents and schools for a job well done.

As we come to the conclusion of another school year, I would like to take this opportunity to offer a thank you to the people and groups that make the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board the wonderful entity it is. I would like to extend thanks to the elected board members. As ‘Acting Superintendent’ from August to January and as full-time ‘Superintendent’ since January, I want to offer my gratitude to all of you for your support to me throughout this year. There were challenges; however, your dedication to the students and staff is greatly appreciated.

To our entire staff, I offer a great big ‘Thank You’. The staffs at our board offices, our schools and other locations work diligently to provide for our students in whatever capacity they work. To Senior Staff, I want to personally say thank you for your ongoing strong leadership and commitment to the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board.

To the students, I wish you all the best as you prepare for your final exams and year end activities. Study hard for your tests and exams and enjoy these last two weeks. To our graduates, all the best as you come to an end of your high school year, and I wish you well in your future endeavors. I know good things are in store for you, and we will hear great things from many of you as you advance in your careers.

Finally, to everyone – enjoy your summer and hopefully get some rest. I look forward to welcoming you back in the fall.

Mr. Chairman, I would like to direct your attention, and that of the board members and staff, to read the comments from our school principals that are placed on individual school websites. These items represent the awards, achievements and successes of our students and staff within the boundaries of the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board. Again, I ask the principals to ensure that these important communications are kept up-to-date.
