HIGHLIGHTS OF THE REGULAR BOARD MEETING

HELD AT SHERWOOD PARK EDUCATION CENTRE

The Board held a Special meeting with Members of the Legislative Assembly. Attending the meeting were the following members:

Concerns were expressed to those in attendance regarding the recent budget discussions with the Department of Education. Board Chair Lorne Green noted that at a meeting held with representatives of the Department of Education on Friday, February 3, 2012, the Board were advised that we will receive a reduction in our budget of 2.1%. Added to this are the COLA costs which could mean a reduction in our budget over $4,000,000. (1.4% was added to cover the COLA costs)

The Board agreed that enrollment is declining, costs are going up and inclusion has increased our costs. It was further highlighted that the Boards are not all alike and we each have our uniqueness which needs to be identified and addressed.

Mr. White, Superintendent of schools provided an oral report. His report read as follows:

The week of February 12th – 18th marked ‘National Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week’. He recognized all staff of the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board for their dedication and commitment to our students and our system. He further thanked staff for their contributions in the wonderful service they provide to our students.

On Friday, February 3rd, Ramona Jennex, Minister of Education, released the province’s new P-12 education plan called, ‘Kids and Learning First’; a plan to help every student succeed. The plan includes a vision and four goals with thirty-nine actions to meet the vision and goals. This plan will extend over three years and will see 6.75 million dollars invested in some of the following areas:
