SPECIAL BOARD MEETING

(1) CALL TO ORDER:

A Special Board Meeting meeting of the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board was called to order today beginning at 7:05 p.m.


(2) RECORD OF ATTENDANCE:

(3) HUMAN RESOURCES/FINANCE REPORT:

Commissioner Matheson reported that the Board discussed a personnel issue.



4. LOOKING INWARD:

Mr. Paul Oldford, Director of Operational Services began discussions with the goals for the evening. He noted the first being; moving the Grade Nine’s to our high schools. Secondly; the following goal would be the decision regarding a process moving forward to address scenarios. He further noted the earliest that the Board could implement any recommendations would be September, 2015.

Seconded by Commissioner Currie

To accept the concept to move the Grade Nine’s to our high schools. . .

Commissioner Parsons voted against the motion

Motion defeated

Commissioner Parsons requested further discussion on the issue. He further stated that we need support from the Department of Education and a meeting with the Minister of Education to address our excess real estate and the issue of P3 schools.

Commissioner Organ requested clarification around existing high schools which are now 7-12 or P-12 and whether they will retain those grades or would they be impacted as well.

A lengthy discussion ensued regarding forming Family of school groups and reaching out to our communities and being transparent and forthcoming to our school communities.

Discussions ensued whether it would be a conflict of interest for Board members to participate in these committee groups which are formed.

To create a SAG committee to oversee each family of schools (student accommodation groups-made up of school administrators, SAC members, Central office staff) to study scenarios which fit communities. . .

5. NEW BUSINESS:

Commissioner Parsons – Meeting with the Minister of Education – He reiterated his earlier comments of requesting the Minister to visit and advise her of the importance of our Looking Inward document.
