Madame Chair, Board Members, Staff, Ladies & Gentlemen...
Tonight I would ask your indulgence to my substituting a presentation in place of my regular Superintendent's Report. I make reference to a special affair that was prepared for Marvin Harvey on his recent retirement from our staff. Marvin was unable to attend his retirement celebration because of illness and his continuing courageous fight with cancer.
I would like to read the presentation as it appeared at the actual time of his retirement ceremony...
Mr. Chairman, Board Chair, Darlene Morrison... Fellow Staff Members, Ladies & Gentlemen...
There is no need for me to detail for this audience the difficulties and frustrations faced by people in the service of regional school boards. We know only too well how demanding our service can be. We know, first hand, the pressures, the demands upon our time and resources, the drain upon our energies and intellects that are part of a career as a school board personnel.
Over the past ten years, it has been my pleasure to share some of these demands with Marvin Harvey. My only regret from that association is that I have not had the pleasure of knowing him longer. Because Marvin was there, the pressures of those ten years lessened, the demands made lighter and my energies replenished by his vitality, his great enthusiasm, and his extreme dedication and outstanding professionalism. Marvin exemplifies the professional educator at his best. Whether the years as a teacher, his time spent as Principal of Baddeck Academy, his Central Office tenure as Co-ordinator of Operations (a former name for Co-ordinator of School Services), we in Central Office could not help but benefit from his drive, his energy, his sense of humor which carried us through some of more challenging times. What I would like to do is give you a perspective of how Marvin is perceived by those who worked closely with him in our regional board. At the expense of leaving some people out, I will make reference only to a group of people that I selected through a random pick:
- I don't think there is a more knowledgeable, dedicated
thoughtful educator in our Province'
Author - Doug Peach
- Marvin knew this system inside and out and was determined to make it work for the benefit of the children and board staff in our region'
Quote - Don Matheson
- I envy him - his career and his tremendous positive contribution. He is a good person and kept students at the focal point of all his decisions, regardless of where they came from'
Author - Beth MacIsaac
- What has impressed me the most about Marvin is his calmness, his sincerity and his commitment to the education of our youth in the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board and his respect for their diversity and of their cultures'
Quote - Archie MacEachern
- I have appreciated Marvin's leadership style, sense of fairness, his ability to solve many problems that would shake the very foundations of a lesser person...
Quote - Darlene Morrison
I could go on and extract similar comments from anyone in this room including his devoted wife, Nancy. It doesn't take a genius to see that Marvin is very highly esteemed by his colleagues and friends.
Marvin, I am delighted to be part of this occasion in honoring you as an outstanding human being. I am proud indeed to add my voice to that of the people gathered here who have all sung your praises. I can think of no one who deserves the honor more.
On behalf of the staff, school board members, parents, and students of the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board, I wish you a retirement filled with happiness, and I thank you for being there when we needed you.
