(1) CALL TO ORDER:


A meeting of the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School board was called to order today beginning at 7:00 p.m.

(5) BUSINESS ARISING FROM MINUTES:


Commissioner Green noted that during discussions at the Wednesday, June 20th Board meeting what he expressed was that he was providing a Notice of Motion to ‘amend’ the Hiring Policy at the School Board meeting which was held this evening. Notice of Motion to amend the Hiring Policy will now be provided at the public meeting scheduled for September, 2007.

There was no correspondence to report.

(7) SUPERINTENDENT′S REPORT:

Superintendent Davis presented his report which was distributed to those in attendance. Highlights of this report included the Commissioner Merlin Nunn′s Report, Interagency Collaborative initiatives and Inclusion. (Copies of the report can be found on the Board website)

Commissioner Tilley wished to see more participation from the schools in the Superintendent′s report. Superintendent Davis noted that a reminder will be forwarded to the schools in September 2007 regarding this issue.


Commissioner Green wished to add under new business a ‘Notice of Motion’ which was omitted in error from the agenda.

(9) NSSBA REPORT:

Commissioner Campbell was not in attendance to present her report.

(10) DIRECTOR OF REGIONAL EDUCATION SERVICES REPORT:

The Director of Regional Education Services, Mr. Jim Burton distributed his report to those in attendance. Highlights of the report included Active Kids - Healthy Kids - May 2007 Bulletin, Branching Out, NUNN Commission Report and The Learning Principal.

Commissioner Morrison gave accolades to Mr. Burton for a job well done.

Commissioner Fraser requested Mr. Burton to make enquiries regarding blanket insurance for special interest groups.

Commissioner Green wished to receive further information regarding the HBV vaccine. Commissioner Lynk expressed his concern and noted that this was not a wise way to spend money. He also wished to see more programming for physical education.

(11) NEW BUSINESS:

a. Commissioner Keagan - Memorial High School Band program - He advised that he has received several phone calls regarding the transfer of the program teacher. Commissioner Keagan would like to see the teacher and administration at the school meet to discuss any concerns.

Commissioner Tilley also received many phone calls regarding this issue. Commissioner Pierrard had also spoken to several parents who had expressed their concern. Commissioner Green expressed his concern of teachers teaching subjects that they do not feel they are qualified to teach.

After lengthy discussions it was decided to refer this issue to Senior Management to try and resolve a solution.

(12) NEW MEETING DATE:

A schedule will be distributed at a later date. It was noted that monthly public Board meetings for the school term 2007 - 2008 will be held at Memorial High School and the following year a decision will be made re: site for 2008-09
